(On September 17, 1994, Alabama's Heather Whitestone was selected as Miss America 1995.)
Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?
Answer: "I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever,"
--Miss Alabama in the 1994 Miss USA contest

"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country,"
--Mayor Marion Barry, Washington, DC

"We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need ?"
--Lee Iacocca

"If somebody has a bad heart, they can plug this jack in at night as they go to bed and it will monitor their heart throughout the night. And the next morning, when they wake up dead, there'll be a record."
--Mark S. Fowler, FCC Chairman

"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff."

Second Annual Hepburn Series of Poker

So here it was the Second Annual Hepburn Series of Poker was held. You can find the first one HERE. A great turn out as many new competitors arrived to the tournament. The defending champion Rev (Paul Morgun) was quoted as saying “this will be a tough tournament, many new faces and many pro’s are back.” At the end of the night Big Shoes (Bryan Mclean) won the tourney with Queen Jack, the runner up and previous champion lost out, with a seemingly better hand King and Queen suited. When Rev paired up his Kings on the flop it seemed as he was going to be crowned champion again, yet Brian hit Jack and another Jack on the turn and the series was over.

(Rev upon loosing on the turn)

We here at the Hepburn Poker Championships were able to catch up with the runner up.
HPC: “How do you feel about coming in second?”
Rev: “Well I went in with the best hand and felt that Bryan was going to call, and then it was all left to luck what the flop would bring. Jacks came up on the flop and turn and that was it. He played well and deserved to win.” HPC: “What was the atmosphere at this tournament like?” Rev: “Well it was tough, Fish (Gil Dueck), was flopping all over the place, his play was erratic and so it is always hard to predict, it was as if he was abducted by KGB at 6 and beaten repeatedly, that would be the only reason why he could possibly be sooo erratic and suspicious of everyone, so the key is knowing that he will over-think his hands…for obvious reasons.”

HPC: “Was there any other highlights?” Rev: “Well it was fun seeing Stalin (Andrew Bergen) commit himself on NOT EVER winning the tourney. All though he is the most experienced player, he was no man of steal on this night. In fact at one point when I took him out of the match I think I spotted a tear. Cactus Jack (Jeff Peters) looked still too rattled from last tourney, he looked like he wasn’t sure if he wanted to do anything with any hand…It was hard to watch we wanted to look away but couldn’t it was like watching a Hutterite fall of his bike, and at one point Cactus destroyed a glass of coke in anger.

(Cactus Jack)
There was lots of loose play and was good to take advantage of it…and like always lots of luck involved, so I am happy with being in the money second time in a row. One disappointment was Doc (Ron Sigstad) not showing up for the tournament, but clearly he knew his result would be a quick exit, so I guess I don't blame him. But there were lots of new players, Full Tilt (Wayne Meek), The Law (Steve Nelson), High Card (Dave Murray) and of course the champion Big Shoes (Bryan Mclean) ” HPC: "Thank you for this enlightening interview, good sir, we wish you more fortune in your play." Rev: "You either got it or you don't."

Some thoughts...

“Mistaking this active life of faith for an institutionally backed and culturally bound belief system is similar to reducing the Mona Lisa to paint-by-numbers.” – Dan Taylor

“Mistakes are the guaranteed consequences of wild abandon. Mistakes are signs of growth. That is why the Old and New Testament are full of people who made mistakes. The church should be the one place in our culture where mistakes are not only expected but welcomed.” – Mike Yaconelli

Loving the book Dangerous Wonder…Thanks Andrew
