the end of the trilogy

On the completion of my reading of Brian's trilogy The New Kind of Christian, The Story we Find Ourselves in, and The Last Word and the Word after That. The Last book has been for sure the most interesting one, although the first one was also a good read. In the last book McLaren wrestles with the idea of hell. McLaren gives a good background on different traditions of hell, historical backgrounds and influences on the 'biblical' idea of hell also. I have many questions and my own thinking was pushed which is always good. To summarize McLaren's ideas I will allow his quote to do it for me: "The language of hell, in my view, like the language of biblical prophecy in general, is not intended to provide literal or detailed fortune-telling or prognostication about the hereafter, nor is it intended to satisfy intellectual curiosity, but rather it is intended to motivate us in the here and now to realize our ultimate accountability to a God of mercy justice and in that light to rethink everything and to seek first the kingdom and justice of God." I like that, we are accountable in the NOW, we are to desire justice and mercy for others as we do for ourselves, we are to desire LIFE for others, and not condemnation...

heaven

We have just returned from Calgary. And I had way to much stuff on my mind not to post some here. What an amazing experience this trip really was. We worked at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Center, we volunteered at Salvation Army, we put on children's carnival's we handed out sandwiches and juice on Easter Sunday downtown and what about all this, well I was the one being served this weekend, my goal was to go with my youth and serve the less fortunate in Calgary, as it turned out, I was served in the most wonderful way. I was taught lesson's about joy, selflessness, giving and much more from the people we were suppose to serve, from my youth and good people from the Dalhousie church...I will post some of our pictures here soon and tell more stories. But the gift that I received was seeing Jesus this weekend.

PS- on another random note we met DAVE KING...in Drumheller...got his picture taken with me, spoke to him about coaching hockey in Russia, about Evgeni Malkin (prob best player not playing in the NHL)...was soooo sweet...sooo sweet....i guess that makes up for cheering for the worst NHL team in Canada...

hell, continued

As I continue my reading of the The Last Word and the Word After That, McLaren continues to push my thinking about Hell. McLaren suggests that often we use hell to instill compliance through fear... turn or burn...I am reminded again that "the church exists not for itself, or for the elite few, but to be a blessing to the world."(McLaren) To fight for justice, for poor, the weak, the vulnerable, etc. "Because Jesus cares for both personal morality and public justice, God whose will is peace and justice for all."(McLaren) all have hope, all have joy.

Tomorrow morning we are leaving for Calgary with my Youth, to work with the local church in serving the inner-city poor, who are suffering hell, because of injustice or neglect, I hope we are able to bring a message of hope and peace, I hope that this can help instill the thirst for justice with in our youth, a love for our neighbors, I can't think of anything better to do on Easter...

hell...

A few days ago I posted a question: "do we live this way do we care for people only with the goal that we will be rewarded? Are our lives oriented on the prize only?" I am now also wanting to entertain the notion do we believe only to avoid hell?
