Christmas day is sooo near!

From the very beginnings of the Christmas celebration in the early fourth century, the theme of the Christmas season has always been the arrival of the light-the light that has come to dispel darkness.
Historically, three services were celebrated on Christmas day, the midnight service, a service on Christmas morning, and another on Christmas night. The texts of these services stress the birth of Christ, but in such a way that the birth is not isolated from the death of Christ and his coming again. What is at the heart of Christmas is the gospel-the overthrow of evil and the establishment of God's reign in our lives and over a restored creation.

cold...

Ok, so this weekend was incredibly icy, snowy and cold, travel was horrible and buying last minute Christmas gifts in the city was like being Bond putting your life at risk!

Speaking of Bond, our small group went to see Casino Royale this Sunday, what a great movie! I know I am a bit late on this, but wow, best Bond ever! The movie was intense, dark, and fast paced, what any Bond movie should be....it was great!

Keeping in step, this Wednesday is our Sr. Youth Christmas Banquet it is Spy theme so I am looking forward to seeing some great costumes!

Where did we go wrong?

This is an interesting article on CNN about Christianity and how it is perceived, and what has gone wrong? Worth the read.

Gaudete Sunday

This coming third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, Gaudete means "rejoice" and comes form the antiphon of the introit psalm "rejoice in the Lord always" (Phil 4:4) Gaudete Sunday is the most festive of the four Sundays of Advent. It is also the Sunday that proclaims the Virgin Mary as the bearer of God's Son. Advent Prayer taken from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer:

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility, that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

The Skit Guys - The Chair

This is a great video for anyone who has been or is a youthpastor, the chair that so many people sit in, in your office and what you hear and see from them, is preformed in this funny skit. Enjoy!

Music to ponder...

I am sitting here at 'The Broadway Roastery' having coffee working on my LC report, and planning Wednesday night, and am amazed at the music that they are playing. It's Christmas time and there are so many classics that are being played, such as Boney M's Mary's Boy Child, and the like, but there are also so MANY new artists signing Christmas songs, I am amazed at how many remakes there really are, with current pop and rock stars signing about the birth of Christ. Now the cynic in me says, yup they will make money anyways they can. But there is something significant (I think at least) in having airways filled with acknowledgements of the birth of Christ, I am not talking about any kind of evangelism or anything of the sort, just songs being sung by 'rock stars' and people that we listen to everyday, about the event that occurred 2000 some years ago... I don't know why but it 'feels' very significant right now...

Christmas time...

I love this time of the year. Now I know how we all feel about shoveling the snow and the -27 C is not always the greatest temperature to wake up too. But I find this time to be just so exciting, maybe it's seeing family and friends, maybe because people try to act more civil towards each other. There is just something in the air. I am not going to go on the rant of all the things wrong with consumerism and greed and all that other junk that happens at this time. What I find amazing is that despite ALL that, there is something special about this time. People sense it, no matter how they show it...at least I find this true in my life. I love Christmas time!!!
