Some updates, and a tribute...

Well, we are back from Abbotsford which was a good conference, the 32 hour drive was a bit much, but the conversations that occurred in the van were amazing and I would not trade that.

Monday Night Jessica and I spent hanging out with Dennis and Karen Skoworodko, who were my youth pastors when I was in high school, and man what a time! We love this couple to pieces, the input and love that they poured into my life cannot be described. The patience and sheer acceptance they had for this renegade punk is indescribable. I know one thing for sure is that apart from my parents I had never seen Jesus more clearly then in the lives of these two. They were real, they were honest, they were never pretentious they were them, and they loved and that was more then enough! There was a lot of things that we did in youth, programs, trips, outings, cokes, conferences, quakes, all were good, but the simple love that I always felt from these two clearly outlined how a Christ follower aught to live, I went through many stages as a youth as we all do, I was disrespectful, I was rude, I was mean and yet these two simply loved me, I never felt conditions on this love, if I dress right, if I say the right things, there was just this love. So as we sat there and talked and ate and looked at pictures, I could not help but be a bit nostalgic of a SIGNIFICANT marker in my life, and be so thankful for this dear couple! Dennis and Karen thank you for your love, and how honestly you live out Jesus to all that come into contact with you!
(I could not resist adding this picture of Dennis!)

Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I am very humbled by them. I need to say how happy I am for you in your ministry and how you let the love of God flow through you as you love kids and encourage them. And I need to say how awesome it was to have you in youth group during your high school years. God packed you so full of potential and it was so obvious – it is so cool to see you using it now as you serve Him. And you brought so much life to youth group – you helped make it an exciting place to be for your friends. And something that I always appreciated about you – you never ignored me. You always were respectful and always made the effort to show friendship with me (even as an “old” guy). Nothing worse than being ignored as you try to minister and you never ignored. And I love your crazy sense of humour! Blessings on your passion to serve God and love Him. We love you and Jessica and your boys. We are so glad that you are in our life.
Blessings, Dennis

I wholeheartedly agree. Dennis and Karen have mentored and befriended me for about thirteen years and I am still benefitting from it in amazing ways. They are truly inspiring people.

How nice to read these kind words and to see the earlier picture of Dennis. I have people like that in my own life - ones who made a real difference to for me and in my development. I suppose that's about as nice a compliment as you can give to someone.

Also, welcome to the High Calling Blog Network. This is Gordon Atkinson. Marcus Goodyear and I are moderating or encouraging or something. Even we don't know what to call it yet. We've been flooded with requests, and we are currently sorting and trying to get everyone into a category on the High Calling Blog page. You'll hear more from me in comments as I read your work. For now bear with us as we try to get this thing started.

Thanks Gordon!

Hi Paul,
I am still amazed and incredibly humbled by your comments! We don’t have a lot of skill or training but one thing God did place in us was a love for you guys. Blessings on you as you care for all the youth in your groups. Dennis has said that you can’t look at any of the youth and not see the potential built right in. They are an amazing bunch. Ya just gotta love ‘em. So go ahead. Just love ‘em.
Blessings & a hug,
Karen

What an amazing thing it is to see how people can actually represent Christ well. Ususally, you only hear about the opposite. Thanks for letting me peak in and giving me the inspiration to pursue Christlikeness.

Hey maybe this High Calling Blog will work! That's the way I came upon your blog.

Blessings, Kim

Paul,

Thanks for this post. I just spent a week with *my* old youth pastor and his wife -- their names are Dennis and Karen, too (!) -- and it was great to hang with them as an adult youth minister myself. Your words expressed my thoughts exactly. Thank God for these mentors... it makes youth ministry a lot easier knowing that there are those who have forged the path before us.

Thanks Jane for stopping in. I find that amazing that you had youth leaders with same name and also had a huge impact on you! Thats great! Maybe Dennis and Karen just travel more then I thought. Thanks for stopping by :)
