SEX GOD continued...

The last review was on chapter 3, since then my life and ministry has been really busy and I have not been able to review more, but I have been reading the book so I am going to do a crash review of the chapters read and just give glimpses of them by listing quotes and thoughts I think are significant or I have found them significant. Reality is that none of them maybe significant if read outside of the context of the chapter which should just motivate you to buy this book and read it for yourself...I have found it an excellent read.

Chapter 4 LEATHER, WHIPS, AND FRUIT:

"In the book of Ephesians, the writer claims that we get enslaved to lust because we become "darkened" in our understanding. The passage explains that we're separated from the life of God because of ignorance due to the hardening of our hearts. It isn't just what lust does, it's where lust leads. God made us to appreciate aesthetics: taste, smell, touch, hearing, sight. Shape texture, consistency, color. It all flows from the endless creativity at the center of the universe, and we were created to enjoy it. But when lust has us in its grip, one of the first things to suffer is our appreciation for whatever it is we're fixated on."

"Addictions often rob people of their appreciation of things"

"Lust says to us, 'If you had this, everything would be fine.'"

"There was a story all over the news about a television star whose boyfriend videotaped the two of them having sex and then put it on the internet. Apparently lots of people were watching it, and she was crushed. Which is sad. But what's tragic is that she was known for having sex and shopping. It kind of became her schtick-she was making a career out of being shallow...but she was made for so much more than this. Her life force was tremendous. But the problem was she hadn't channeled it into something, or a few things, that is good and true and beautiful. She hadn't focused all of that God-given sexual energy into the ongoing creation of a better and better world. And so she fell for all of these temptations that robbed her of the joy she was made for. The last thing she needed to do is tone down those energies. She simply needed to redirect them."

"Life is not about toning down and repressing your God-given life force. It's about channeling it and focusing it and turning it loose on something beautiful, something pure and true and good, something that connects you with God, with others, with the world."

Chapter 5 SHE RAN INTO THE GIRLS' BATHROOM:

"Love is handing your heart to someone and taking the risk that they will hand it back because they don't want it. That's why it's crushing ache on the inside. We gave away a part of ourselves and it wasn't wanted."

"Love is giving away power. When we love, we give the other person the power in the relationship. They can do what they choose. They can do what they like with our love. They can reject it, they can accept it, they can step towards us in gratitude and appreciation. Love is giving away. When we love, we put ourselves out there, we expose ourselves to be vulnerable."

"...this is why for thousands of years Christians have found the cross to be so central to life. It speaks to us of God's suffering, God's pain, God's Broken heart. It's God making the first move and then waiting for our response. "

"If you have ever given yourself to someone and found yourself waiting for their response, exposed and vulnerable, left hanging in the balance, you know how God feels."

"In matters of love, it's as if God has agreed to play by the same rules we do. God can do anything-thats what makes God, God. But God can't do everything. God can't make us love him-thats our choice. Love is risky for God too. Which is a bit like a boy asking a girl to dance."

Chapter 6 WORTH DYING FOR:

"...Why do we hear stories of people risking their lives to save others and we often tear up, even if we don't know any of the people involved? Because people are worth dying for. We know it to be true deep in our bones. And when we see someone actually do it, it's overwhelming."

speaking of Ephesians 5:22: " The wife isn't commanded to do anything different from what everybody is commanded to do in the previous verse, namely submitting. Placing needs of others ahead of her own, especially in her most significant relationship-the one with her husband...[husband in turn is]...supposed to be like Christ. And what does that look like? Notice how the text continues. Verse 24 repeats the submit command, and then verse 25 reads, 'husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Christ's headship comes from his giving himself up for the church. His sacrifice. His surrender. His willingness to give himself away for her. His death. Whatever authority the word head carries with it is rooted in the sacrifice of Christ, and therefore the sacrifice of the husband."[bold added by me]

"The command to the husband is to love your wife, just as Christ loved the church...the word love in the Greek language is a specific kind of love...agape same word that is used for God loved/agape the world. So the man is to love the woman, to agape her, like God agapes the world...Agape is a particular kind of love. Love is often seen as a need, something we get from others. Agape is the opposite. Agape gives."

"Agape doesn't love somebody because they're worthy. Agape makes them worthy by the strength and power of its love. Agape doesn't love somebody because they're beautiful. Agape loves in such a way that it makes them beautiful."

On a subway in England observing teenagers who were making out:
"One of the girls in particular was fascinating to watch. It was clear what she loved being loved. Or whatever you would call teenage obsession. Her boyfriend was full-on groping her in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon in public, and it was clear to the rest of us on the subway that she was thoroughly enjoying it.

What was intriguing was the look on her face. She was so happy. And the happiness was obvious directly tied to her boyfriend.

What drives a girl to give herself to a boy at such a young age? What does she believe about herself? About him? About sex? About her worth?

What if she said to her boyfriend, 'I'm interested in your character, your integrity, your honor-I want to find out what you're made of. Are you brave? Are you courageous? Would you fight for me?'

What if she said, 'I'm not going to sleep with you anymore because I want to know what, exactly, our relationship is based on'?

What if the subway girl demanded that before she gave herself to subway boy, he had to prove that he was the kind of man who would lay down his life for her?

Would subway boy still want to be with subway girl?

Because she's worth dying for?"

Big Update...

Well its good to be back! Marva Dawn Lectures were awesome, it was great to be fed spiritually and enjoy the Vancouver sun. Jeff and I endured the constant honking of the vancouverite driving maniacs and have persevered and are better for it. So here are only a few quotes from the magnitude of great things we heard this past week:

"Forgiveness always has cost, in forgiveness you make up the difference"

"When we think of heaven and hell we need to make heaven larger and hell smaller." - idea taken from C.S. Lewis in The Great Divorce

"
Revelation is not so much about the future but how to deal with our sufferings now. Community of sufferers, and the truth about the Kingdom is that we have a hope."

"God’s tabernacling occurs when our powers is brought to an end in weakness."

Well those are just a tiny few nuggets...what a wonderful week of challenge and a great way to think them through with Jeff. It was also great to see my cousin Lisa and stay with her for few days and then to visit and stay with Ryan and Naomi Dueck was most excellent as well. What a week of reflection, thought and spurring. I have missed this school environment and was good to be engaged again. And now am back refreshed and ready to roll...big events looking forward to our u16 undefeated high school team soccer game on Tuesday (practice Monday if any of you youth reading) small groups with youth on Wednesday and Thursday and Cedar Lodge Retreat on the following weekend! It's going to be sweet. Also looking forward to finishing Rob Bell's book Sex God, which I haven't been able to update on the blog for a while, so I will not do chapter by chapter review, but give glimpses of each chapter in the next review hopefully this week. And am looking forward to starting to read Marva Dawn's book Unfettered Hope.

Marva Dawn, Vancouver, Jeff and I...

Well Jeff and I are in Vancouver and its been going sweet, although few moments of stress at the airport with fears of delays, car rental issues with higher costs for the long weekend and driving extremely ugly PT Cruiser but all that aside we are here on time and have been enjoying the last two days, we actually get some good-long free time in the afternoons, which we have productively spent being tourists, enjoying the unlimited fries at Red Robin, walking around pointing fingers (index) at things and enjoying the actually sunny nice day that today (Monday) has been.

Marva has been good the first day of class has been very introductory and no real 'meat', but I am really enjoying her already, you can check stuff on her here. My stay at my cousins has been good as well, although the floor is not as soft as I was hoping it would be, its still all worth it. And Wednesday promises a great plunge into the book of Job, and then into the bowls of soccer greatness Champions league...I will keep this updated as we go... (once Jeff figures out his camera we will have some pictures, I hope)

My boys...

I think this is clearly the artistic pose that has come from Jessica, as they deeply gaze 'out there', are they emotionally unavailable, are they too deep to understand, are they about to rescue some one from a burning building and then walk away with a simple 'just doing my job' or is it when you are this big of a deal you just don't look into the camera? I am not sure, what I am sure of is I love them...
